Our Story

OUR HISTORY

Powered by Data was started by Ajah, a Montreal-based software company that builds tools for Canadian non-profits. They wanted to use their expertise in technology and open data to help the social sector as a whole. The initiative has since grown into a project of MakeWay.

We focus on systemic and policy solutions that benefit the sector as a whole, rather than specific technologies or applications. That’s why we work with key stakeholders, particularly in philanthropy and government, to open up data and increase the sector's capacity to use information effectively. Our approach combines consulting, technical collaboration, research and advocacy to achieve those goals.

Powered by Data operates on MakeWay’s shared platform. MakeWay is a national charity and public foundation with a goal to enable nature and communities to thrive together. This is done by building partnerships, providing solutions, grants, and services for the charitable sector across the country.

MakeWay has full fiduciary and governance responsibility for Powered by Data.
